LIBERTY PARTY AT NICE, FRANCE CIRCA MARCH 1946

Left to Right...Cromwell Smith, James A. Ray, Paul Powell, V.J. Sanders

Note the "Flat Hats" part of the winter dress uniforms. Also note that the white stripes around the right
shoulders of the three on the right. This signifies that the sailors were above deck sailors. Below decks
sailors (firemen, machinist mates, and boiler tenders, etc, strikers) wore a red stripe; aviation rate strikers
wore green stripes. Cromwell Smith does not have a shoulder stripe because he as RdM 3/c and the stripes
were not worn by petty officers.
